A Driving Under the Influence (DUI) charge in Tennessee can cost you a lot more than the high price of the fine. It can cost you the suspension of your license and even jail time. A first time offense can carry jail time from 48 hours to 11 months, a fine of $350 to $1,500, and revocation of your license for one year. A second offense can carry jail time from 45 days to 11 months, a fine of $600 to $3,500, revocation of your license for two years, and forfeiture of vehicle. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducted an evaluation of seven publicized enforcement demonstration programs in as many states to reduce impaired driving. Tennessee was one of the seven states in the program. The four-year evaluation program was funded by the NHTSA and was designed to reduce impaired driving through well-publicized and highly visible enforcement. The Tennessee Highway Patrol was one of the lead agencies in the program and led the effort in Tennessee.

According to the study, in a twelve-month period there were:

• 23,668 DWI arrests by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
• 404 Intoxicated drivers were involved in fatal crashes (BAC >.08) as reported by Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS)
• 59 DWI arrests per intoxicated driver in fatal crashes as reported by the FBI and FARS
• 142 DUI arrests resulted from checkpoints conducted by the Tennessee Highway Patrol
• 295 DUI arrests resulted from roving patrols conducted by the Tennessee Highway Patrol
• 33 DUI arrests resulted from saturation patrols conducted by the Tennessee Highway Patrol
