Event Helps Victims Break Free of Domestic ViolenceA candlelight vigil was held on October 27 in Blount County Tennessee to honor the victims and survivors of domestic violence in the area. Many feel that as the economic problems of the country grow, so does domestic abuse. The residents of Blount County claim that as the economy goes down, the reported cases of domestic violence go up. A victim's garden was also established at the candlelight vigil and it included silhouettes to symbolize the darkness of these heinous crimes. Many of the people that attended the event were survivors of domestic violence attacks that happened relatively recently while one attendee had been a victim of domestic violence for close to 26 years spread out over two relationships. The Haven House of Tennessee was a main sponsor of the event and helps women and children that are in abusive relationships. They provide a safe haven for these victims as well as an easy way to seek help and therapy. The majority of domestic violent crimes do not go reported because of fear that the violence would become worse but the cases that are reported lead to arrests involving the suspect and closure for the victim(s). Suspects of domestic violence crimes can face anywhere from one year in prison to life in prison depending on how serious the accusations are and whether or not the victim involved in the domestic violence survived the abuse.
