Doctor Appeals Sentence After Car AccidentA Bristol doctor involved in a November 2006 car accident is appealing the sentence of 6 months in prison and 6 years probation after pleading guilty to the wreck. He will begin serving his jail time on September 19, 2008 in the Sullivan County jail. The doctor, Matthew Morgan Gangwer, had pleaded guilty to and was convicted of charges including DUI in the 1st degree, felony reckless endangerment, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, evading arrest, 3 counts of aggravated assault, and 2 counts of vandalism ranging over $1000. He was arrested after crashing into police cruisers during an attempt to flee a November 6, 2006 traffic crash on US Highway 11-E near Tennessee Highway 394. While trying to flee the scene of the crash, Gangwer drove in the emergency lane hitting a Bluff City police cruiser and then backed into a Bristol police cruiser. Police had to block him in to keep him from escaping. Gangwer has 3 previous DUI charges and a charge of obtaining drugs by fraud in the state of Michigan. Gangwer admitted that he has an ongoing problem with alcoholism and he is receiving treatment for depression. He also admitted to prior drug use. Some of the drugs listed include marijuana, cocaine, LSD, peyote, and prescription medications. The status of his medical license depends on the outcome of the case. |
